American Kennel Club (AKC)American Kennel Club (AKC) - The American Kennel Club (AKC) has been running since all the way back in 1884 and is still going strong. This site covers a range of AKC breeds, AKC dog shows, AKC boxer dogs, AKC registration, and more popular AKC areas.

AKC registration is recommended for dogs and puppies whose parents are already registered with the American Kennel Club, registered puppies and more sought after when it comes to selling them.

AKC Litter Registration

The American Kennel Club (AKC) is the oldest purebred dog registry in the US. AKC registered more than 1.3 million purebred dogs and more than 550 thousand litters in its 145 breeds in 1997.

The top 10 breeds (Labrador Retriever, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Poodle, Beagle, Dachshund, Cocker Spaniel, Yorkshire terrier, and Pomeranian) accounted for more than 560 thousand of the total individual AKC registrations.

AKC's online dog registration service is intended to be used by both litter owners (breeders) and puppy buyers. The litter owner uses the system to enter information about the puppy buyer or to register a puppy to themselves. The puppy buyer uses the system to register their puppy.

Most people who breed purebred dogs claim some affiliation with a registry as a seal of quality for their puppies. Many use that affiliation as a marketing tool, but buyers often learn the hard way that an AKC puppy purchased from a pet store or a backyard breeder is highly unlikely to be of the same caliber as an AKC registered puppy purchased from a reliable breeder.

Open registration
When a new breed is accepted in the American Kennel Club a specialty type of AKC registration known as open registration, is available for a limited time. The American Kennel Club in conjunction with the Parent Club (also known as a national breed club) sets this time limit for the breed.

In order to be registered under open AKC registration, a dog must be born in the United States, or one of it's possessions or territories. Otherwise, it will have to be submitted with a foreign dog registration application.

Registering a dog
Registering a Dog A purebred dog is eligible for AKC registration if its litter has been registered. When you purchase a dog said to be AKC-registrable, you should get an individual dog AKC registration application from the seller. Once the application has been completed, you should submit it to the AKC with the proper fee. You can also use the online registration form to register a dog or puppies. In about three weeks, you will receive your dog's AKC registration certificate.

When your puppy is registered, you can take advantage of the AKC pet healthcare plan with an introductory 60 days pet healthcare insurance at no-cost to you.

Information on this page and additional registration details can be found on AKC Registration.
